Frequently Asked Questions for the DINI list (revised July 1, 2008):
Q: I want to invite someone to join the DINI list. How do they subscribe?
A: They can send email to <dini-subscribe@yahoogroups.com>, they can go to <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dini/> and click the "Join This Group" link, or, you can send their email address to <dini-owner@yahoogroups.com> and the list manager will send an invitation to them. They may join the list by responding to the invitation.
Q: How do I use the web-based features of the list?
A: Go to <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dini/>. You will have to register with Yahoo!Groups if you have not yet done so. Registration is free; it involves choosing an ID and a password and filling in a small amount of information including your age, zip code, and occupation. Yahoo!Groups will then send you a confirmation email message to which you must respond.
Q: What web-based features are available?
A: An archive of all past messages, a chat room, 20 megabytes of storage space where we can post documents, 30 megabytes of storage space where we can post pictures, and pages where you can tailor your personal list settings and profile. There is also a polling feature. (The list manager's approval is needed to set up a poll.)
Q: Where can I get help with a list problem or a Yahoo!Groups problem?
A: Contact the DINI list manager at <dini-owner@yahoogroups.com>.
Visit Yahoo!Groups Help at <http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/groups/>.
Contact a Yahoo!Groups customer care representative at <support@yahoogroups.com>.
Q: What does DINI stand for?
A: In the early days of the Destination ImagiNation program, there was some reluctance to use DI as the acronym, since those letters were closely associated with the late Princess Diana. It was suggested that DINI be used instead, taking the capitalized letters from Destination ImagiNation, Inc. At the time the DINI list was created, this acronym seemed to be the one we were going to choose.
Q: I've designed a (pin, t-shirt, resource kit, etc.) for fund-raising. Can I offer it to DINI list members?
A: Fund-raising for individuals or individual teams may not take place on the list. Corporate advertising is not allowed on the list.
Q: I'm overwhelmed by the number of list postings. Is there anything I can do to reduce the amount of email I receive, short of dropping off the list?
A: Yes! You can change your delivery mode. One option is DIGEST mode. In digest mode you get a single large message once or twice a day, containing up to 25 postings. This reduces the clutter in your mailbox, but you still see the full text of each posting. Another option is NO MAIL. If you choose this option you will not get any postings in your mailbox. You will be able to read messages when you choose to, by going to the list archive at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dini/messages>.
You can set your delivery mode by sending an email message:
<dini-digest@yahoogroups.com> to set DIGEST mode
<dini-nomail@yahoogroups.com> to set NO MAIL mode
<dini-normal@yahoogroups.com> to go back to individual messages.
You can also set your delivery mode at the list web page,
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dini/>, by clicking the "Edit My Membership" link.
Q: How do I unsubscribe from the DINI list?
A: Send an email to <dini-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com>, or go to <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dini/> and click the "Edit My Membership" link. There will be a button titled "Unsubscribe". If these don't work, contact`<dini-owner@yahoogroups.com>.
Please do NOT post a message to the list asking to be unsubscribed!
Q: I unsubscribed, but I'm still getting messages. What's wrong? A: It appears to take the Yahoo!Groups servers up to 72 hours to completely process an unsubscribe request. If you are still getting messages after 3 days, contact
the list manager at <
dini-owner@yahoogroups.com>.
Q: Can I get a computer virus from the list? A: Not directly. An email can only contain a virus as an attachment. The DINI list is configured so attachments are stripped from messages before they are posted to the list, so a list posting will not contain a virus.
However, if you post a message to the DINI list, your email address will be sent out to list members along with your posted message. If a list member then saves your message or puts your email address in their address book, and later that list member gets a virus on their computer, it is possible that the virus will find your address and send itself to you, in a message which appears to be from the list or a list member.
Some viruses can spoof the sender's address so it is also possible that a message containing a virus may LOOK like it has come from the DINI list, even if it hasn't.
In general, do NOT open any attachment to an email message unless you are quite sure it is genuine. If you can, run a virus scan on it before you open it. (If you do not have virus scanning software you should remedy that situation ASAP.)
Q: I want to share a picture or a document with the list. Should I send it as an attachment to a message? A: No, any attachments will be stripped off before the message is posted to the list. What you should do is to upload the document to the Files area, <
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dini/files/>, and then notify the list where to find it. That way, only those who are genuinely interested need to spend the time to download it.
Likewise, the Photos area is <
http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/dini/lst>. We welcome DI-related digital images, but please reduce the file size as much as possible before posting any.
The list manager gets notified whenever anything is posted to the Files or Photos areas. Inappropriate images or documents will be removed and disciplinary action (moderation or removal from list) will be taken if necessary. Also, documents and pictures may be removed without warning to make room for newer material.
Q: I'm being flamed or harassed off-list by another list member. What should I do about it? A: Forward abusive messages to the list manager at <
dini-owner@yahoogroups.com>.
Q: I've changed email providers, and I want to switch my DINI list membership to the new email address. What do I do? A: There are three answers. One very easy way, one slightly less easy way, and one for the diehard do-it-yourselfer.
The easiest way is for you to send an email to <
dini-owner@yahoogroups.com> politely asking the moderator to make the change for you. This action won't be a true change of address. The moderator will issue a "join the list" invitation to your new address and will drop the old one. You MUST respond to the invitation or the new address will not be added to the list. The disadvantage of this choice is that you will lose your individual settings, such as delivery mode, and you will have to log in to Yahoo!Groups to reset them for the new account.
The slightly less easy way is for you to subscribe and unsubscribe yourself. You should send a message to <
dini-subscribe@yahoogroups.com> from the NEW address. If the old address is still active, you can also send a message to <
dini-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com> from the OLD address. (If the old address is dead, you can skip that step.) You must NOT send the unsubscribe request from the NEW address. Like the first option, theseactionswill result in you having to redo your individual settings. It is also possible for you to subscribe new addresses and unsubscribe old ones from the DINI home page.
If you want to maintain all your settings, i.e., do a true change of address and not an unsubscribe-resubscribe, then the following procedure should do it. Warning - Yahoo! doesn't make this easy!
- Go to the DINI list home page at: <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dini/>. You will be asked for your Yahoo! ID and password. If you have previously registered with Yahoo, enter the requested information. Otherwise, follow the instructions to register. If you have forgotten your password, there are some instructions to recover it.
- On the right-hand side of the DINI home page, you will see a link: "Edit My Membership". Click that link.
- On the page that appears next, a little ways down the page there will be a link: "Add new email address". Click that link.
- This page will have a box in which to enter the new email address. Type it in, then click the "Continue" button. You will get a page with two boxes where you must enter a confirmation code and your Yahoo! password.
- This is the tricky part. Yahoo! will send a confirmation message to the email address which you typed into the box. They do this to detect mistyped emails and to prevent a person from signing someone else up to a list as a form of harassment. Open your mail reader and read the confirmation message, which should arrive in a few minutes at most. (If it doesn't show up, you may have mistyped the address.) You will find the confirmation code in the message.
- Enter the confirmation code and your Yahoo! password in the boxes from step 4, and click the "Verify" button.
- Now you will find yourself back on the "Edit My Membership" page. Under the heading "Email Address", you should have a box with a pulldown menu containing both your old address and the new one you just verified. Make sure the new one is the one that appears in the box. Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit the "Save Changes" button.
- At this point, you will start receiving mail from the DINI list at the new address and will stop receiving mail at the old address. You can quit at this point and everything will be OK. However, if you want to properly clean up after yourself and delete the old address completely from the list, you need to click the "Account Info" link on the top right-hand corner of any Yahoo page. You'll be asked for your password again, and then you'll get a page showing your "Yahoo! ID Card".
- Under "Member Information", the ID Card will list your new email address as your primary address and your old one as an alternate. Click the "Edit" button out to the right of the "Member Information" label.
- Now blank out the old email address. (There isn't a delete button - you have to use your mouse and keyboard to delete the address.) Click the "Finished" button at the bottom of the page. (Yahoo! may require you to fill in some other information before you leave the page, though.) And that should do it!
Q: I've got another question that ought to be in the FAQ. What do I do with it? A: Send it to <
dini-owner@yahoogroups.com>.
